A small addendum about the word “aspiring”

April 25, 2011 § 1 Comment

In the bajillions of cover letters, queries, and pitches that I’ve written, I have come to the conclusion that referring to myself as an “aspiring writer” is stupid.

Here is why: Writing is my hobby and my trade. It’s all I’m good at. Sometimes I write a lot, other times I go days without stringing together more than a Facebook post’s worth of words. But above all, the thing I never spend any time doing is aspiring to write. Regardless of my publication status*, writing isn’t off in aspiration-land for me. I’m a writer, even when I’m totally slacking on it and watching Netflix instead.

But yeah, it’s my career. The only thing I aspire to be is paid more.

*First book review published nationally at age 16! But 1. who’s counting? and 2. it was terrible.
